Protective Eyewear for When You Really Need It

Different types of sports and activities have different levels of risk. In the US, nearly 30,000 eye injuries treated in emergency rooms are sports-related. However, 90% of all serious eye injuries could be prevented by wearing appropriate protective eyewear.

Regular eyeglasses do not provide proper protection and can, in some cases, make an injury worse if they shatter. One study found that basketball was the leading cause of sports-related eye injuries in the US, followed by baseball, softball, airsoft rifles, pellet guns, racquetball, and hockey.

What Protection Do You Need?

Protective sports eyewear should be worn for most sports to prevent eye injuries and vision loss. Eyewear should have shatterproof plastic, often referred to as polycarbonate lenses, to avoid further injury.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends choosing eye protectors that meet the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) guidelines. It is important to be careful and aware when participating in activities or games involving projectiles and sharp objects.

Typically, we are aware of protecting our eyes from harmful UV rays during the summertime when we are spending time outside. However, UV protection is essential in all seasons to protect your eyes from an increased risk of developing eye conditions such as cataracts, growths on the eye, and cancer.

In the summertime, for those that enjoy playing sports or spending time on a body of water, eye protection is crucial. The light reflected off asphalt, water, and sand can be dangerous and increase your risk of damaging your eyes.

Always remember to wear proper UV protection when spending time outdoors, even if it’s overcast.

Additionally, for skiers and snowboarders, the sun’s reflection off the snow and ice can create a risk of developing snow blindness. Snow blindness is a form of photokeratitis and can be compared to a sunburn on the eye. Symptoms are very unpleasant, but wearing proper snow goggles with UV protection can significantly decrease your risk of developing snow blindness.
